Cardiology

Cardiology is a medical specialty focused on the study, diagnosis, and management of conditions related to the cardiovascular system, which includes the heart and blood vessels. It involves understanding the anatomy and physiology of the heart, as well as the diseases that affect its function, such as hypertension, heart attacks, and valvular heart disease.

The Anatomy of the Heart

  • Right Atrium: Receives deoxygenated blood from the body through the superior and inferior vena cava and pumps it into the right ventricle.

  • Right Ventricle: Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs via the pulmonary artery for oxygenation.

  • Left Atrium: Receives oxygenated blood from the lungs through the pulmonary veins and pumps it into the left ventricle.

  • Left Ventricle: Pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body through the aorta. It has the thickest walls due to the high pressure required to pump blood throughout the body.

  • Valves: located at the junctions between different regions of the heart and function to prevent the backflow of blood, ensuring unidirectional flow through the heart chambers.

  • Septum: A thick wall that divides the right and left sides of the heart, preventing the mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.

  • Coronary Arteries: Supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle itself, ensuring it receives the necessary nutrients and oxygen to function properly.

Interview of Cardiology:

Background Information:

Dr. Wilber Su, an esteemed cardiologist and a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), currently serves as a cardiac surgeon at the Banner Health Center. In the interview, Dr. Su discusses the POLARx Cryoablation System, a technology he developed to treat atrial fibrillation (AF), a condition characterized by abnormal heart rhythms. This innovative system uses balloons of various sizes to freeze abnormal cells in the heart. For more information, please refer to the interview.
